- Dipl.-Ing. (FH), Architecture, University of Applied Sciences, Germany, 2012
Mr. Sachs consults on projects requiring architectural and construction technology expertise. He specializes in the technology and performance of building systems with a focus on the building envelope, weatherproofing and energy efficiency.
Mr. Sachs has evaluated the building envelope performance of both residential and commercial construction projects. Mr. Sachs has investigated the architectural design and construction of systems such as curtain walls and storefronts, as well as the performance of components such as window units and flashings. He has experience in cladding systems such as three-coat cement plasters (stucco), exterior insulation finish systems (EIFS) and glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC).
Prior to joining Exponent, René Sachs worked at an architecture firm in the metropolitan region of Frankfurt am Main in Germany where he was responsible for design development and construction supervision of new and existing buildings. During graduate studies (Diplomstudiengang) at the University of Applied Sciences in Darmstadt, Germany, Mr. Sachs worked as an architecture intern for a firm located in Malibu, California where he worked on single-family residential, apartments, condominiums and hotels that were being constructed in the greater Los Angeles area.
Mr. Sachs' dissertation (Diplomarbeit) focused on self-sufficient buildings (independence from the public grid/requiring little to no support from other resources) with specialization in building envelope performance as it relates to energy and water. He received a special recognition for his dissertation, which presented an innovative concept related to self-sufficient buildings and the effectiveness of building envelope performance.
