  Determine What Went Wrong

  We start with understanding the problem in the real world by reviewing consumer complaint databases or conducting primary research with product users or focus groups.  Whenever possible, we examine incident units to gather clues from actual field failures. We then recreate the problem in our laboratory testing facilities, gathering scientific data on how and (most importantly) why the problem occurs. In our labs, we can drop products, crush them, immerse them, cycle them, and subject them to myriad other stresses and strains.

In some cases, we can narrow a recall scope to a particular time frame and range of product serial numbers when we discover the root cause, limiting the scope of the potentially impacted population of products.
