How do we help clients understand challenges when it comes to paints and coatings?
Exponent has expertise in all aspects of liquid paints, powder coatings, functional coatings, and thin films. Our multidisciplinary scientists and engineers provide insights for a range of paint and coatings challenges — including surface preparation requirements, material selection, micro and nanostructure, interfacial chemistry and roughness, and thermal expansion, as well as other sources of stress and environmental effects.
Multidisciplinary expertise within diverse industries.
We assess your use of coatings in a variety of applications, from nanometer-scale thin films to paints and protective coatings hundreds of microns thick. Our multidisciplinary approach and deep industry experience make us uniquely qualified to provide the answers you need with expertise in surface characterization, materials science, chemistry, mechanics, and process knowledge, as well as our background in organic and inorganic materials and manufacturing processes.
State-of-the-art testing and research laboratories.
At Exponent's state-of-the art testing facilities located throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, we perform laboratory tests based on industry standards, including the American Society for Testing and Materials, National Association of Corrosion Engineers, American Architectural Manufacturers Association, and others to investigate paint and coating failures. We also use various analytical methods such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to evaluate coating quality and long-term performance of coatings in corrosive environments.
Devices & thin films.
Exponent has deep expertise in solving difficult challenges related to device and thin-film failures. Our polymer scientists and multidisciplinary engineers apply a fundamental understanding of materials and processes to address concerns related to dielectric properties, environmental degradation, adhesion, residual or applied stresses, fracture toughness, fatigue, and other challenges related to the successful integration and reliability of the device.
Coatings for medical devices.
Protective and functional coatings are increasingly incorporated into medical devices where they can provide benefits such as biocompatibility, passivation, and drug delivery. Our scientists and engineers can assist with materials selection, accelerated testing, characterization, failure analysis, and intellectual property analysis.
