How do you quantify and improve autonomous vehicle safety?
Exponent has decades of experience working with automakers, suppliers, and government agencies to create safety frameworks that can help guide automotive development and the evaluation of incidents in the field. Our multidisciplinary teams work with autonomous vehicle engineers, scientists, and researchers to determine root and contributing causes of AV and related incidents and leverage that information in the formulation of safety guidance and protocols. We take a holistic approach to AV safety, examining AV sensor systems, machine learning algorithms, environmental conditions, and human factors. We help AV manufacturers establish and maintain a culture of safety by supporting the development of robust safety processes and documentation, as well as supporting the response infrastructure and analysis when a field issue or failure occurs.
We can conduct live tests at our Test and Engineering Center (TEC), purpose-built for the automotive industry, using technology specifically designed to support the evaluation of advanced vehicle technologies, such as the Soft Car 360 harmonized Global Vehicle Target. Exponent can run 3D simulations, conduct field research, help create testing and safety procedures, and support autonomous vehicle developers interfacing with government organizations and regulatory bodies. We can also help developers determine which data to collect before and during an incident to ensure they have what they need to interact with regulators, respond to issues quickly and appropriately, and improve automated vehicle systems moving forward.
Capabilities & Services
Our vehicle, mechanical, computer and data science, and material engineering experts work with our human factors and biomechanics scientists to analyze on-road incidents and create unique testing scenarios for autonomous vehicles that support development efforts for continuously evolving technologies.
Innovative Testing for Increasing Automation
Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) have the potential to transform road safety — but only if the technologies that power them are accepted by drivers and confirmed safe, too. Exponent is actively developing testing strategies for tomorrow's vehicles using the Soft Car 360 harmonized Global Vehicle Target.
