Remembering the Titanic: 105 Years Ago

April 14, 2017

April 15th marks the 105th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic. One of the greatest disasters of the 20th century, more than 1,500 lives were lost in the North Atlantic when the ship hit an iceberg. In 1998, Exponent participated in an American Bar Association mock trial which took a look at the historical record to ascertain if design defect played a role in the sinking of the ship.

"Litigating the Titanic: The Original and Greatest Disaster of this Century" was conducted over a two-day period at the ABA's annual meeting. Former Exponent Chairman, Dr. Roger McCarthy was an expert for the ship designer and builder, Harland & Wolff. Exponent's Visual Communication Group prepared all the demonstratives for this event. As part of this anniversary, we wanted to present a few results of our investigation, including a timeline that showed the events leading up to the tragedy and how one change may have prevented the accident from occurring.
